Does anyone have a real-life story about a household animal that you have owned escape from a cage, playpen?
I’m looking for some good stories about a hammy, guinea pig, or anyother animals, that you have had escape from a playpen, cage, ect………(non-fiction) (Happy endings only)
One time, My guinea pig, Mitchel, was in a short playpen in the living room, while i went in the kitchen and cleaned out his cage. As i finished, i went in the living room to grab Mitchel (i didn’t think he was tall enough to climb out) But he did. As i franticly searched, i found him behind my livnig room chair. I set him back in the playpen, and watched, as Mitchel heaved himself over the barred wall of the playpen, and scampered away, but not far before i could catch him. Ha, and now, when he has to get out of his cage, we put him in my safe basment. Then when i come down, i try to find him. He loves to play that game. I call it our version of “hide and seek” but he REALLY doesn’t want to be found, that would mean that it is time to go back in his cage.
I have a male short-hair guinea pig who’s a bit on the active/curious side. Instead of buying him a cramped pet-store cage, I built him a roomier cage in the popular “C&C” style – coroplast folded and scored into a bedding tray placed in an enclosure of square grids attached with connectors (you can buy a set at places like bed bath & beyond…they’re designed for storage squares but are customizable and make great, safe cage material!) ANYway…Charlie LOVES his time running free around the living room (we have areas behind the TV blocked up and cords tied out of the way) and despite the fact that he has an extra-large cage, he hates being cooped up all night. I went to put him away one night, and after securing him in his cage went to bed…until I heard a strange noise.
I didn’t have a “roof” over Charlie’s cage since the sides are 15″ high. But earlier that day I had made him a “towel tent” in the corner of the cage….basically a cardboard triangle secured in the corner with a towel draped over it, so he could hide underneath. He seemed to love it.
Until I put him away that night and came back in to find him sitting, not IN his cage, but BESIDE it. He had leaped up ON his towel tent (a good 8″ high) and from there, it was an easy hop over the side of his cage to freedom!
Another time, my husband and I had been watching TV all night when we realized we hadn’t heard anything from Charlie lately (who was loose in the room). We spent fifteen minutes in a panic, searching the room and his cage, but there was no piggie in sight. We were sure that he couldn’t fit in the 1″ space behind or under the couch, and besides the blocked-off TV area there was nowhere else he could possibly be! Had he escaped the apartment?!
Naw, when we finally decided to calm down and think things through, my hubby decided to tidy up a bit. Of course the only real “mess” in the room was a pair of his pants he had thrown on the floor earlier. He picked them up, and out came one fat guinea pig and several guinea pig “pellets.”
Ever since then, I like to remind my husband of the time he pooped in his pants…
