Is it normal to have dark brown blood at the start of your period?

I started my “rag” yesterday and it was dark brown instead of red. I was also having some intense cramping too. I normally dont cramp, bloat or have any of those symptoms. My cycle has always been regular and I know its normal to have brown blood towards the end. NOW is it normal for your rag to start off with dark brown blood?
