How do you suggest painting real wood paneling?
I have a large great room and it is all wood paneling, no drywall underneath. I want to brighten up the room and I have looked into wallpapering but haven’t been pleased with it so far . Does anyone have any sugguestions?
Pro’s and Con’s of painting?
Chances are this panelling will be varnished or pre-finished std panels. Either way both will require a coat of oil base primer (self etching is best) this will provide a good base to paint over. If the surface is really glossy, a light sanding with 120 grit paper would be a good idea to help the paint adhere.
Next you’ll need to caulk cracks and joints (gives a nice solid finish, cracks are unsightly) and fill holes. Priming the wall first will save you time, as you will only have to fill or caulk what stands out – otherwise it is sort of a guessing game.
After sanding the filler, apply another coat of primer on any filler and caulking, and then 2 coats of finish paint (or ? depending on the color, paint quality and your painting skills) – latex is fine if you used a good flat oil primer.
Note: Biggest mistake made in painting is not using enough paint and trying to roll paint out to much per roller full of paint.
There are some good self etching latex primers available – check with your local supplier if you do not want to use oil base paint.
