How do I get a kitten to use a scratch post?
She is somewhere between 3-5 months
Make sure it is sturdy and is not going to tip or slide if she tries to use it. (and really it’s best to get one that will stand up to an adult cat) sometimes the cat trees including scratching surfaces are a good choice because they are big enough and sturdy enough. but some free standing scratching posts are great like the Ultimate Scratching Post or the Purrfect Post.
Make sure it is covered with some rough material like sisal . that is usually more appealing to cats than fluffy carpet.
Put it in a well travelled area not off in a corner of the basement that nobody hangs out in. Part of the reason for scratching is to mark territory. so they are more likely to use one that is in their regular pathway.
and if she is currently scratching something else she shouldn’t, put the post by that to start with while doing something like using 2 sided tape on the place she should not scratch. then once she starts using the post you can gradually move it.
Rub catnip on it..
Then play with her often on and around the post using toys — for example get a wand toy and make the toy run up the post — the idea of course is to get her to stand up and put her paws on it, maybe climb it, and discover that it is fun to scratch.
you can also try mimicking scratching yourself, hoping she might get the idea.
Also try getting a horizontal surface like the inexpensive corrugated cardboard scratchers that a cat can stand on and scratch. (put catnip on that too)
You should also be clipping the tips off her claws… starting now will make it easier.You might have to start by just touching her paws and pushing the pads to extend the claws and give her a treat for that. Then when you start actually clipping you might not be able to do them all at once at first, that’s oK even if you can only do one or two per session…and again, give her a treat afterward. . You can gradually build up to clipping more at once..
